Christmas Light Installation in Washington

A German river town with a downtown of original brick and a hillside of houses looking over the Missouri.

A downtown that kept its buildings

Washington sits on the Missouri about forty-five minutes west, and it is one of the few towns of its size in the region whose downtown survived intact. Brick storefronts, original cornices, a riverfront that people actually walk in December, and residential streets climbing the hill behind it full of nineteenth-century housing.

Old buildings set the rules. Nothing is stapled, nothing is punched into original fascia, and everything runs in a single warm colour temperature — cool white makes hundred-and-fifty-year-old brick look grey and cheap. We measure each facade, cut on site, and take it all down in January with the same care.

What works here

  • Clips only, never a fastener — original fascia, trim and slate stay untouched
  • A single warm colour temperature — cool white turns old brick grey
  • Porches, columns and bay windows outlined — trace what the builder drew
  • Dormers and steep peaks cut on site — no stock length stretched across a gable
  • Careful January takedown — removed the same way it went up
Cool white on old brick is the fastest way to make a beautiful building look cheap.

Downtown frontage is scheduled around trading hours and run on timers, so the street is lit every evening the shops are open. One price covers install, season-long service, takedown and storage.
