Christmas Light Installation in Carlyle, Illinois

The Clinton County seat beside the state’s biggest lake, east on 50 with water and open sky around it.

Open sky, open water, dark nights

Carlyle is the Clinton County seat, sitting beside Carlyle Lake — the largest body of water in Illinois. The town has a settled grid and an old suspension bridge, and around it the ground opens out to sky and water with very little competing light.

Open country means a display is seen from a long way off, so the main roofline has to be right before anything else is considered. Even spacing, one warm colour, no gaps. Lakeside properties get the approach lit as well, because the drive is often longer than the house is wide.

What works here

  • One warm-white run, evenly spaced — with nothing competing, restraint reads best
  • The porch line picked out — most houses here have one worth showing
  • A wrapped tree at the front — doubles the display without touching the house
  • Wreaths and garland at the door — the finishing touch, not the whole plan
  • Timers and mid-season checks — so it is lit every evening without you thinking about it
Open water and open sky. A well-lit house out here is visible for a mile.

Carlyle sits at the eastern edge of our map with Breese and Greenville, grouped into set install weeks each season.
