Black Jack sits on rolling ground in North County, a quiet residential city of ranches and split-levels on decent-sized lots. The grade is gentle but it is there, and houses set even slightly above the road show more of their front elevation than a flat lot would.

That is worth designing to. Where the house sits up, we light the elevation as a whole — roofline, entry and bed line together — so it reads as one thing rather than a bright stripe over a dark front. Where it sits level, one clean run and a wrapped tree is plenty.
